Building Bridges to Success:
Robla District’s Partnership with Freedom Schools
Robla District’s Partnership with Freedom Schools
The Robla School District has successfully expanded its acclaimed Freedom Schools program into the district’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) during the 2023-24 school year. This initiative, rooted in a rich legacy of promoting literacy and empowerment, aims to significantly enhance the academic and personal development of students within the community. Established by the Children’s Defense Fund, Freedom Schools draw inspiration from the Freedom Summer of 1964, focusing on educational excellence and social justice. The program, running for six weeks each summer, offers rigorous academic instruction alongside enriching extracurricular activities. In Robla School District, Freedom Schools have been pivotal in improving students’ reading skills and fostering a genuine love for learning, beginning each day with “Harambee,” a Swahili term meaning “all pull together,” to energize and prepare students for success.

The Freedom Schools program in Robla School District places a strong emphasis on literacy through its Integrated Reading Curriculum, which highlights culturally relevant literature. Students engage with books by authors of color that feature characters and stories reflecting their own experiences and backgrounds, thereby improving their reading skills and fostering a sense of identity and pride. The program’s holistic learning experience ensures that students receive a well-rounded education by dedicating mornings to intensive reading and academic work, while afternoons are enriched with activities such as swimming, dance, and field trips. This comprehensive approach nurtures both the intellectual and physical development of students, creating an engaging and supportive environment for learning.

A cornerstone of the Freedom Schools’ success in the Robla School District is its strong emphasis on community involvement and collaboration. Local leaders and educators, including guest readers, actively engage with students, sharing their passion for reading and learning. This community-centric approach is further strengthened by the district’s partnership with the Roberts Family Development Center (RFDC). Founded by Derrell and Tina Roberts, the RFDC is renowned for its dedication to supporting underserved communities through educational achievement, family support, and community development. The partnership between the RFDC and Robla School District is built on a shared vision of fostering academic excellence and social-emotional growth among students.
The RFDC plays a critical role in the Freedom Schools program, offering invaluable resources and expertise that ensure the program’s effective delivery and sustainability. This includes providing trained staff, coordinating community resources, and facilitating parental engagement. Servant Leader Interns (SLIs) are also integral to the program’s success, serving as classroom teachers and role models. These interns lead literacy-rich curricula, assist with meals, and chaperone afternoon activities, ensuring that students receive consistent, high-quality instruction and support throughout the day. The comprehensive support structure provided by the RFDC and SLIs has significantly enhanced the program’s capacity to address the diverse needs of students and their families, making it a model for community-driven educational excellence.

Building on the success of the summer program, Robla School District integrated Freedom Schools into its Expanded Learning Opportunities Programs (ELOP) during the 2023-24 school year, with impressive results. Superintendent Eileen Aguba Chen highlighted the positive impact, noting a 35% reduction in chronic absenteeism among African American students. This shift in attendance, accompanied by significant improvements in academic performance, underscores the program’s effectiveness in engaging students and enhancing their educational experience.
Parent and student testimonials further illustrate the program’s impact. One parent shared, “My child used to struggle with reading and often didn’t want to go to school. Since joining Freedom Schools, they not only love reading but are excited about school every day. The program has been a game-changer for us.”
Similarly, a fifth-grade student remarked, “I love the books we read at Freedom Schools because they have characters that look like me and go through things I understand. I’ve made new friends, and my reading has gotten so much better.”
The program’s emphasis on culturally relevant materials and supportive learning environments has fostered a love for reading and learning. Michelle Crisp, Principal at Taylor Street Elementary School, has witnessed this transformation firsthand, observing students who once struggled with reading develop a genuine joy for learning. As the district looks to the future, it aims to expand Freedom Schools into more ELOP initiatives, empowering even more students to reach their full potential.
